Brahms ~ Ein deutsches Requiem
One of the most beloved choral works of all time, Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) by Johannes Brahms is the culmination of the Chorale's 31st season. The piece will be performed in a special arrangement by the composer for Chorus, Soloists and Piano Four-Hands.

Steeped in the Protestant tradition, Brahms turned to Martin Luther's translation of the Bible for his text, and Ein deutsches Requiem stands apart from the traditional Roman Catholic mass. Absent are the depictions of judgement and eternal damnation; rather, Brahms' interpretation is a spirit-filled work offering consolation for those left behind. Brahms had begun thinking about a memorial work soon after the death of his friend, Robert Schumann. Upon the death of his mother, he began in earnest on the Requiem. In working through his personal grief, Brahms called on the theology of his Protestant upbringing to create a work of great depth and reassuring comfort.
