Description
Arguable the most prestigious and talked about opera house in New England is the Boston Opera House. Since its conversion from a movie theater to an opera house in 1980, the Boston Opera House has filled its schedule with some of the finest ballets, operas, and touring Broadway productions in the country. The facility stands as a testament to the opulence and elegance that accompany the high art of opera. The Boston Opera House is currently home to the Opera Company of Boston and the Boston Ballet, two of the finest companies in the world.

The building was originally built in 1928 as one of the first movie theaters -- called the B.F. Keith Memorial Theatre -- and showcased both films and vaudeville. It became the Boston Opera House in 1980, but due to neglect and financial misfortune from the opera company, it became heavily damaged over the next twenty years. It was renovated in the early 2000s thanks to help from Mayor Thomas Menino and Ted Kennedy, and reopened in 2004. Since that time, the performance schedule at the Boston Opera House has been full of acclaimed performances that has made it a fixture in the Boston community.
