GLOBAL POTENTIALÂÂ'S FIRST FILM RAISER IN BOSTON

Come see powerful short films made by our students as they documented their lives and experiences in the rural Bateys of the southwest Dominican Republic. Entrance donation: $10 Please RSVP now: rsvp@global-potential.org WHO WE ARE: Global Potential (GP), (a project of Globalhood, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) provides urban youth from low-income communities with the skills and perspective that enable them to effect positive change in their lives, communities, and the global community. OUR STRUCTURE: Through a 1½-year engagement in leadership training, social entrepreneurship, international cultural exchange and service learning, GP participants develop awareness of global issues, and the skills, confidence, and leadership to do effective cross-cultural work. SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS: During the five six-week trips abroad we have run, 44 students have built a classroom, community gardens, and sidewalks; created murals, community maps, a municipal census, daycamps, community clean-ups and HIV testing campaigns; and supported women's microenterprise by raising goats, planting 9000 corn stalks, and 10,000 seeds for biodiesel. We have worked in the Dominican Republic since our inception in 2007, and are now expanding to Nicaragua and Haiti! SUMMER 2009, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: This past summer, some of our Global Potential youth from Brooklyn and the Bronx participated in a pilot filmmaking workshop while they lived, worked, and shared cultural experiences in Batey 8 and Batey Cuchilla in the Dominican Republic. They worked hard through this process - filming interviews in swarms of mosquitoes, waking up early to film roosters or people playing dominoes, and furiously transcribing interviews before laptop batteries ran out or the electricity shut off. In the end, they created amazing documentaries of their lives and experiences in the Bateys. COME SUPPORT US!
