Play Reading Series - Anna in the Tropics

Pulitzer Prize winning play that was performed on Broadway in 2003. Set in the cigar capitol of the world--Ybor City, a district of Tampa, Florida in 1929--this poignant play explores the economic threats of the Great Depression, mechanization of production and the advent of cigarettes on the lives of the factory workers interwoven with a fascinating story of love and betrayal exacerbated by “el lector”—the reader hired to read to the factory workers who introduces them to Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.

The author is Nilo Cruz, who was born in Cuba in 1961 and later immigrated here. He became playwright in residence at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ and received a similar appointment at the new theatre in Coral Gables, Florida. He also taught drama at Brown and Yale Universities.
