Description:
The army of conquest headed by Hernán Cortés was the catalyst for the most rapid and profound cultural and political changes ever experienced by any civilization throughout history. The effects of his invasion accompany nearly every Mexican’s idea about identity, history and life, but his face, his name, even his remains, have nearly vanished from contemporary life and memory. “In the Shadow of Cortés: From Veracruz to Mexico City” is a record of a journey through Mexico today, and attempt to illuminate the shadows of the past. A collaboration between Professor Kathleen Myers, a specialist in Mexican history and culture, and Steve Raymer, a veteran in photojournalism of world cultures, “In the Shadow of Cortés” combines interviews and photography to record the living legacy of the conquest in modern-day Mexico. The exhibit will run October 2 through December 20.
