Juneteenth Culture Festival at The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Each year communities around the USA celebrate the ending of slavery with festivals marking the event. Birmingham's Juneteenth Celebration takes place in Kelly Ingram Park and the grounds of the Civil Rights Institute. Celebrations include a special Culturefest and free admission to the museum. On 19 June 1865 Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were now free. Despite being two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, it was not until General Lee surrendered and Union troops arrived in Texas that the Proclamation could be enforced.
