Description
You Say You Want a Revolution?: Rip Van Winkle and the Problem of American Identity
Chris Metress, PhD, Director, University Fellows Program, Samford University
Everyone knows that Rip Van Winkle slept, but few remember what he slept through: the American Revolution. This important fact is one clue among many that Washington Irving's beloved classic is more than just an entertaining folktale. Like many of the works in Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, Irving's story explores what American national identity looks like in a world full of cultural, political and geographic change. Put in conversation with paintings from the early republic, the curious tale of Rip Van Winkle raises surprising questions about our most cherished national ideals.
