High Plains BookFest: The Big Read

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts that brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

In Billings, The Big Read is presented by the YMCA Writer's Voice and will focus on Selected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers. Activities will take place October-November, 2011.

With the $13,050 grant from the NEA, the Writer's Voice will present The Big Read and bring American nature poetry to a diverse audience throughout eastern Montana.

The Big Read kicks off October 13 with the High Plains BookFest: The Nature of Poetry, the Poetry of Nature at various locations in downtown Billings including the Babcock Theatre, Western Heritage Center, Yellowstone Art Museum and the MSU Billings campus.

The Gala BookFest featuring Poet Laureates from four western states will be 7:30pm, Friday, October 14 at historic Babcock Theatre in downtown Billings.

Skinner expects 30-40 poets and writers to participate in the three day BookFest.

Seventeen authors have been selected as finalists for the 2011 High Plains Book Awards presented by the Parmly Billings Library. All of the books were published for the first time in 2010 and written by a regional author or writing team, or is a literary work which examines and reflects life on the High Plains. Eighty nominations were received from 20 publishers and individuals in the US and Canada. Fifteen of the finalists will be reading from their work throughout the day on Saturday, October 15 at the Yellowstone Art Museum. Winners will be announced at The High Plains Book Awards Banquet on Saturday evening at MSU-Billings. Tickets are available at

"Along with The Big Read reading and discussion programs, we will expand our existing rural education program, Poets on the Prairie, to offer poetry classes to schools in Billings and six other eastern Montana counties," said Writer's Voice Director Corby Skinner. The Big Read will continue programs and workshops at school, libraries, museums and other public venues in South-Central Montana throughout the month.
