The Bands and Music of Spain: A Multimedia Presentation with Llorenc Mendoza-Ruiz and Dr. Richard Scott Cohen at Ferris State University

Co-presented by Spanish guest conductor Llorenç Mendoza-Ruiz and Ferris' own Dr. Richard Scott Cohen, this lecture explores the artistic and cultural role of bands in Spanish society, where they perform symphonic masterworks as well as lighter folk, popular and festive musical styles to accompany the many holidays and festivals celebrated throughout the year. Spain is a historical center of bands and band music. Popular among Napoleon's armies in the French Revolution, the band tradition took a special hold in the Valencia region of Spain. Mendoza-Ruiz is an award-winning conductor throughout Spain and Europe, and Cohen is an award-winning Fulbright researcher on the Valencian band world. See separate listing on February 19 for a Ferris State Band concert featuring both conductors. For more information, contact Richard Scott Cohen at (231) 591-2484 or rscohen@ferris.edu.
