This is an initial organizing meeting for hottpac.org. Head Off The Threat Political Action Committee (HOTTPAC) is the only national PAC focusing exclusively on reversing global warming. Founder and Chair, Karyn Strickler started hottpac because she saw the need for leadership an order of magnitude beyond anything even being contemplated by our political leaders -- in order to reverse global warming. COME IF YOU AGREE, DON'T COME IF YOU BELIEVE IN CLEAN COAL OR ANY ASPECT OF THE FOSSIL FUEL ECONOMY Mission Statement: Head Off The Threat Political Action Committee, HOTTPAC, works on the grassroots level to elect candidates to reverse climate change. We place volunteers, staff, give money and strategic advice to targeted U.S. Senate and Gubernatorial incumbents and challengers nationwide, who support our platform. Like the Earth itself, our valuable, organizational resources are limited. By targeting U.S. Senate and Gubernatorial races, we focus our resources on 150 of the most powerful political office-holders in America. We are currently recruiting volunteers, raising funds, developing the organization and preparing for the Governor's and the U.S Senate races in Maryland, Virginia and around the country. Please come! Our website is currently under construction. Here is our HOTTPAC Platform, which is currently in development, to give you an idea of our values: We believe that this approach will be required to reverse global warming. This platform will be the basis for our endorsements of Governors and U.S. Senate candidates nationwide: •Reduce greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, 80% below 1990 levels by 2025 •Shift off of the fossil fuel economy and entirely to renewable energy including wind, solar, small hydro projects without dams and geothermal by 2018. •Zero logging, mining, grazing or drilling on America's public lands. •No new coal fired power plants •Dispel the myth of clean coal •No new nuclear power plants •End deforestation •Protect Endangered Species; clean air and clean water •Support a carbon tax on polluters •Support tax credits for individuals who switch to wind, solar, small hydro projects without dams and/or geothermal •Phase-out carbon trading, which is a temporary, stop-gap, measure, but not sufficient to fund the transition off the fossil fuel economy to a renewable energy economy. •We support a federally funded program of historic proportions similar to the American Space Program or the Tennessee Valley Authority -- which brought fossil fuel-based energy into American homes beginning in 1933 -- to bring renewable energy to every American household (details to follow) •Shift federal and state subsidies from fossil fuels to renewable •Reduce U.S. energy consumption 50% by 2018, through conservation.
