Country Joe McDonald, a performer at both our 40^th anniversary Bethel Woods Music Festival and the 1969 Woodstock festival, is touring with A Tribute to Woody Guthrie for the centenary year of Guthrie's birth. McDonald's tribute is a 90-minute performance art piece that combines Guthrie music with dramatic insight and narrative as he weaves together Guthrie's best-loved song and some of his writing. McDonald feels a personal connection to Guthrie begins with his own father who, like Guthrie, grew up in a small town in Oklahoma, and called himself a farm boy and hobo just like Guthrie.

McDonald grew up with Woody Guthrie music in his household and has a history of Guthrie projects. He made what Marjorie Guthrie (Woody's wife) said was "one of the finest Woody Guthrie albums ever made." That album was Thinking of Woody Guthrie. For the 1975 Hollywood Bowl Tribute to Woody Guthrie concert, McDonald was asked by Harold Leventhal, manager of the Guthrie archives, to put to music one of the many Guthrie lyrics that had no recorded music. This was the first time this was ever done. His performance of "Woman At Home" opened the door to his vast library of lyrics. He subsequently produced an album of Guthrie's son Joady Guthrie singing his own original songs.
