Searching for the Franklin Expedition in Canada's New North at University of California, Berkeley

Searching for the Franklin Expedition in Canadas New North Lecture | February 29 | 12-1:30 p.m. | Moses Hall, IIS Conference Room, 223 | Canceled
Speaker: Adriana CRACIUN, English, UC Riverside Sponsor: Canadian Studies Program (CAN))
Searching for the lost John Franklin Arctic expedition has been a popular and profitable industry since the explorer vanished in 1845. Canadas twenty-first century Franklin searches appear to map closely onto the previous 170 years of searching and relic hunting, but this apparent continuity distracts from what is genuinely new. Searching for Franklin is no longer oriented back toward Britain and the commonwealth, but into the future of the New North. The new value in locating Franklins ships is strategic, not commercial, and could play a role in Canadas larger efforts to regulate Northwest Passage waterways. This talk will focus on these new geopolitical stakes surrounding Franklin, and the important heritage questions that would be opened up by the location of Erebus or Terror.
