Event details: Par Lab Opening
Description
Tour/Open House | December 1 | 10 a.m.-1 p.m. | Soda Hall, Par Lab 565
Sponsor: Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS)
On the Monday after the Thanksgiving Weekend (December 1), we will celebrate the opening of the Parallel Computing Laboratory in Soda Hall at UC Berkeley. This newly remodeled space is designed to foster creativity by encouraging spontaneous interactions between faculty and students in the many areas of expertise of the Par Lab: applications, software engineering, programming languages, libraries, testing, operating systems, and computer architecture. This Lab is the result of Berkeley being the unanimous top choice by Intel and Microsoft for a $10M, 5-year Universal Parallel Computing Research Center.
At 10:00 AM we will start with a ceremony and a tour of the new Lab and posters describing some of the research. This will be followed by a few remarks given by some of our guest speakers at 11:00, and then we will conclude this celebration with lunch at noon. During lunch, several Par Lab grad students will host themed table discussions that you may choose to participate in. (You can choose the topics that appeal to you most when you register online).
Among some of the special guests who will give a few remarks as part of celebrating this occasion are: Shankar Sastry, Dean of the College of Engineering, UC Berkeley; David Patterson, Director of the Par Lab; Tony Hey, Corporate VP of External Research at Microsoft; and Pat Gelsinger, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Enterprise Group of Intel Corp. Other invited special guests are Andrew Chien, VP, Corporate Technology Group and Director of Intel Research; James Larus, Director, Software Architecture, Data Center Futures at Microsoft; Daniel A. Reed, Director, Scalable and Multicore Computing at Microsoft; and Burton Smith, Technical Fellow, Microsoft.
