The Wiegand Gallery is proud to present “Divine Visions Worldly Lovers” highlighting Indian paintings from various private collections and curated by Robert J. Del Bontà. This exhibition includes paintings from the 15th to the 20th century and related sculptures from the 8th to the 12th century.
The opening reception will be held on Sunday, September 27 from 1:30-4 p.m. There will be a lecture by the exhibition curator and noted art historian, Bob Del Bontà, at 2:00 p.m. The reception and lecture are open to the public. Admission is free.
Indian Miniatures have enchanted art lovers for centuries. These works were executed on a very small scale on perishable material such as paper and when larger sizes were needed on cloth. Sometimes they were part of manuscripts written at the time, illustrating narratives. Other paintings were executed as part of sets illustrating poetry or royal lineages. These works are prized for their dazzling colors, their elegant line, and their inventive use of space. The minute exactness with which they were painted and the symbolic details never cease to stimulate our imagination.
