Event details: War Requiem
Description
Benjamin Britten's War Requiem (1962) is the composer's interpretation of the traditional "Mass for the Dead". The Latin liturgical texts alternate with poems in English by the soldier, poet and pacifist Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), who died in action a week before the armistice that brought the First World War to an end.
Britten was acknowledged as the leading British composer, both at home and in the United States. He was commissioned to write this work for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, built alongside the ruins of the old cathedral that had been destroyed by bombing in the Second World War.
Experience this moving choral and orchestral work in the brilliant atmosphere of Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu.
Interpreters:
Anja Kampe, Ian Bostridge and Peter Mattei, Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Chamber Chorus of the Palau de la Música Catalana, Escolania de Montserrat
