AL. RINGLING THEATRE FRIENDS PRESENT HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ SHOWCASE

On Sunday February 19th, the Al. Ringling Theatre will host an event for high school music students interested in jazz. Students from Baraboo, Reedsburg and Wisconsin Dells high schools will participate in a jazz clinic in the afternoon, followed by a public concert in the evening. Members of the All That Jazz Big Band, a 20-piece ensemble from Madison, will instruct the students during the afternoon master classes. In the evening, the students and the All That Jazz Big Band will present a Jazz Showcase concert on the Al. Ringling stage. The concert starts at 5:00 pm; tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and $3 for children or students. Concert tickets can be purchased at the Al. Ringling Theatre or on the website at www.alringling.com. The afternoon classes are not open to the public. This event is presented with support from the Madison Jazz Society.

This jazz clinic is the first new jazz education program for Sauk County in many years, and is intended to increase performing and educational opportunities for area students interested in jazz. In the clinic, students will learn more about jazz techniques and theories. At the evening concert they will have the opportunity to perform with first-class jazz musicians. Participation in this event is free for area music students. The high school music teachers helping out with the jazz clinic and concert are Greg Lang from Baraboo, Scott Bruer from Reedsburg, and Matthew Roble, Marti Fults and Zach Baker from the Wisconsin Dells high school. The high school jazz clinic and concert is an educational program of the Stage III Youth Programs of the Al. Ringling Theatre Friends, a non-profit organization.

The All That Jazz Big Band is a regular feature at the Madison Art Fair on the Square and Tunes at the Monona Terrace, has opened a show for Rockapella, performed with singer and actor Tom Wopat, and has presented concerts at the Stoughton Opera House and Monroe Performing Arts Center. The band has also performed for many festivals, concerts in the park series, weddings, conventions, anniversaries, and other area celebrations over the past 25 years. All That Jazz Big Band is also dedicated to an outreach program for the "next generation" of jazz musicians. They have performed with and for students throughout Dane, Sauk, and Rock Counties. Band members leading the afternoon clinics are: Director Paul Heinecke(trumpets); Jerry Stich of Baraboo (trombones); Ryan Gill of Waunakee (saxophones); and Dr. Steve Morgan and Dave Heilman (rhythm section).
