Venue details: Baltimore Basilica in Baltimore metro area
Description
As the first Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States, the Basilica of the Assumption is a major landmark in the history of the nation. The Basilica is, as well, a major monument in American architectural history. It has been described as "North America's most beautiful church" by architectural historian Sir Nicholas Pevsner and as "one of the finest ecclesiastical monuments of Romantic classicism" by Henry Russell Hitchcock. The Basilica is generally considered the architectural masterpiece of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the first professional architect to practice in the Republic and the architect of the U.S. Capitol. When originally constructed on a hill overlooking the city of Baltimore, the Basilica with its massive dome was an icon visible for miles. Today, it is one of the most significant landmarks remaining from the early nineteenth century in the United States. Because of its great historical and architectural significance, the Basilica has been designated a national Historic Landmark by the U.S. Government.
