Description
Retrace the steps of one of the most fascinating civilizations in the Americas. Follow Inca traditions and history from Cuzco, through the fertile sacred valley and then hike to the ultimate Peruvian icon, magnificent Machu Picchu. Pricing Deposit of $260 is due upon booking to hold space. Final Payment is due on September 2, 2009 $1060 per person Single travelers will be paired with a person of the same gender Itinerary Day 1 Lima The Plaza Mayor, in the heart of Lima's historic centre, is an excellent place to get a feel for Peru's colonial past. Surrounded by churches, the centre has a distinctly Spanish flavour. Nearby, the Museo de la Inquisicion offers an insight into the Spanish Inquisition and the beautiful Monasterio de San Francisco houses some fascinating catacombs. Day 2 Cuzco Get acquainted with the intriguing blend of Inca and Spanish culture and discover of Cuzco's lesser-known sights on a guided walking tour. Day 3 Sacred Valley/ Ollantaytambo Travel through the fertile Sacred Valley and learn about the local lifestyle, browse traditional handicrafts and pick up a few words of the Quechua language at a community visit. Look out for the maize crops surrounding the river and covering the terraces stretching high into the valley walls. These crops have long been the main source of food for the high Andes communities. Spend the night in Ollantaytambo - a magnificent example of Incan urban planning. Days 4-7 Inca Trail/ Machu Picchu Trek a trail that once linked the Inca Empire. The ancient paths wind past mountains, across high plateaus and through dense cloud forest and temple ruins. Climb over challenging mountain passes - including 4,198 metre-high Warmiwanusca (Dead Woman's Pass) - and camp out in the evenings. On the final day, climb the steps to Intipunku, the Sun Gate, and watch magnificent Machu Picchu rising from the mist. Rest for a moment before striking out to uncover the mystery of these amazing Inca ruins. Day 8 Cuzco Optional trips to the Urubamba River or mountain bike rides through the Sacred Valley are highly recommended. For those with weary legs, have lunch at Aldea Yanapay Restaurant, part of a self-sustainable organisation that provides the kids of Cuzco with health and education facilities.
