Playwriting Workshop - Improv to Script

This intensive, one-day workshop for playwrights provides exercises in the essentials of scene writing: initiating, escalating and resolving conflict between two characters in five minutes. Students will have the opportunity to observe or participate in improvisations and then to develop dialogue stimulated by these. Includes in-class writing, as well as sharing and critiquing of scenes. INSTRUCTOR: Patricia Montley, Ph.D Patricia Montley , a member of the Dramatists Guild, has had twelve plays published, either separately or in anthologies or textbooks (Samuel French, Meriwether, Heinemann, Applause, Dramatic Publishing, Prentice-Hall, Dramatics Magazine). She has had over 150 productions and won or placed in some dozen playwriting contests. Her work has been supported by residencies at the Millay ArtistsÂÂ' Colony in New York and the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in California, and by grants from the Maryland and Pennsylvania Arts Councils, the Shubert Foundation, the Mary Roberts Rinehart Foundation, and Warner Brothers. For seventeen years Montley chaired the Theatre Department at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, where she directed some 40 productions. She has a Ph.D. in theatre from the University of Minnesota and has taught playwriting at UMBC, Goucher College and the Johns Hopkins Odyssey Program. She was a judge for the 2009 Baltimore Playwrights Festival.
