"Welcoming the Wild"
March 23, 2010

Fritz Haeg, an internationally recognized artist, gardener and activist who advocates turning front yards into edible landscapes, will present the spring 2010 E.T. York Distinguished Lecture on March 23 at 7 p.m. at Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art in Auburn.
Haeg's presentation, "Welcoming the Wild," will highlight projects he has undertaken to replace lawns with landscapes and gardens that provide food for humans and habitat for wildlife. His lecture also will address the roles artists and designers play in rethinking our ideas about landscapes and how we relate to our environment and one another.
The College of Agriculture's E.T. York Distinguished Lecture Series features internationally known speakers addressing issues related to agriculture, food, the environment, or natural resources.
The lecture series was established at Auburn in 1981 from an endowment by E.T. York, Jr., and his wife, Vam Cardwell York, both native Alabamians and AU graduates. York served as head of the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service from 1959 until 1962, leaving to head the Federal Extension Service in Washington, D.C. He later became provost and vice president for agriculture at the University of Florida. In 1975, York was named chancellor of the State University System of Florida, a post he held until his retirement in 1980.
Haeg's lecture is also part of Art in Ag, a multidisciplinary project that highlights the aesthetic and social values of agriculture and natural resources and explores ways that art and science can work together to improve society. Art in Ag will sponsor a panel discussion on April 7 that will revisit some of Haeg's ideas and also encourage more dialogue between artists and scientists.
