Contemporary Mandala: New Audiences, New Forms at Emory University

Admission is free

This exhibit bring together artists who explore the mandala form as artistic expression and those who use it as a tool for transformation. The mandala as a form of expression has proven to be an important resource for contemporary visual artists searching for new ways to utilize historical visual language to address the achievement of transformation as well as both internal and external balance. This exploration has taken many forms - from re-drafting traditional visual depictions to utilization of new materials to the performance body participating in the mandala form. The longstanding concept of the body moving through space, as manifested in large-scale, three-dimensional mandalas of the Himalayas, is a powerful model for contemporary art with an emphasis on the performative. Artists in the exhibition include Sanford Biggers, Don Cooper, Faith McClure, Christopher McNulty, Andra Samelson, King Thackston and Marcia Vaitsman.
