Description:
The Student Planning Association's Social Justice Committee hosts its annual lecture event: a discussion on the effect of coal on communities. This event aims to educate planners and others about the effects that coal has on communities, in every stage of production, from mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia to coal-fired power plants and pollution in Georgia. We will take a place-based approach, and view this issue from the lens of two regions: Mingo County, West Virginia and Atlanta, Georgia.Representatives from each region will discuss the economic, environmental, and health impacts that are caused by the coal industry. Then, we will consider how to move beyond coal, and look at the impacts of moving to alternative energy sources, also in terms of economic, environmental and health impacts. Our speakers represent diverse backgrounds:
  • Donna Branham, a community organizer from Mingo County, West Virginia, who will share the impacts of mountaintop removal mining in her community.
  • Seth Gunning of the Georgia Sierra Club, and Jennette Gayer, of Environment Georgia will discuss the impact of coal in Georgia.
  • Dr. Marilyn Brown of the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy will discuss the importance of moving beyond coal and the alternative energy sources that will take its place.
