"The Emerging Retail Payments System: Opportunity For or Threat to Community Banking."

Changing consumer preferences advances in technology and regulatory mandates have combined to alter the shape of the payments system over the next decade. How all of these factors will affect community banks is unclear. Will opportunities exist only for large financial institutions, card networks, technology companies and retailers? What will be the opportunities for community banks to be at the center of the system? Will bank deposits continue to be necessary to access the payments system of the future? How will mobile technology and social media influence how payments are made and processed? Will banks simply become a third party or a “no–party” in a system driven and controlled by non‐banks and consumer preferences? Will recent regulations and new regulatory bodies move us from a market‐driven approach to payments into a regulation‐driven system?

The 2012 Southeastern Bank Management & Directors Conference will address these and other related questions and issues with a series of speakers and panelists. The Conference is designed for senior officers, CEOs, and directors of community banks across the southeast. A discussion of these issues and networking with other senior bank officers and directors.

This one‐day conference is organized and directed by James A. Verbrugge, Professor of Finance and Chair of Banking Emeritus, Terry College of Business.
