The Diary of Anne Frank - Presented by Circle Ensemble Theatre
Adapted from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, edited by Otto Frank. Winner of the 1956 Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, Critics Circle Award, and virtually every other coveted prize of the theatre. Very few plays have moved the Broadway critics to write such glowing notices, receiving the unanimous acclaim of all the top New York reviewers. The NY Times, said, "A lovely tender drama…Strange how the shining spirit of a young girl now dead can filter down through the years and inspire a group of theatrical professionals in a foreign land." The NY Herald-Tribune said, "The precise quality of the new play is the quality of glowing, ineradicable life—life in its warmth, its wonder, its spasms of anguish and its wild and flaring humor…” But Anne’s own family described her as a "little bundle of contradictions." She herself felt strongly the idea that she had a dual personality: the "pure" being that she wanted to be, and the "frolicsome little goat" that others judged her to be. The original adaptation, staged so much closer to the horrific events depicted in the play, tended to idealize Anne to the point where it was sometimes difficult to relate to her as a real person. By adding in selections from her recently published complete diary, we hope to bring a more compelling representation of Anne and her fellow fugitives to our audiences. This event is sponsored in part by the Morton Theatre Corporation.
