Martin Scorsese takes a left turn into family film territory and delivers a movie that celebrates the wonders which the imagination can conjure. Winner of an astonishing 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Film Editing, Cinematography and Visual Effects, it‘s based on Brian Selznick’s award-winning best-seller about Hugo, a 12-year old orphan who lives in the walls of a Paris train station in 1930. He fixes clocks and other gadgets as learned from his late father and his missing uncle. The only thing he has left that connects him to his father is an automation that doesn’t work; Hugo has to find its heart-shaped key. On his adventures, he meets a cranky old man, George Melies, who works in the train station and was once a famous film director. Hugo finds that he has a surprising connection to his father and the automation, and as he discovers it, the old man starts remembering his past and his significance to the world of film-making. Young actor Asa Butterfield is aces as Hugo, Ben Kingsley is marvelous as Melies, Sacha Baron Cohen plays the Stationmaster, and the stellar supporting cast includes Jude Law, Ray Winstone and Richard Griffiths. ’It’s charming, serious, beautiful and wise to the absurdity of life!” – N.Y. Times. ’You and your inner child stand to be enraptured!” – Boston Globe. In 2D. Ends at 9:45. PG
