Falls pose a significant threat to older adults’ independence and quality of life. With so much to lose, a concern about balance can quickly turn into a fear of falling. This fear may lead to reduced activity, isolation and dependence on others. Instead of protecting oneself from a fall, a person may become weaker and more susceptible to serious injury. The good news is that most falls are preventable.
A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls coach training offers volunteers an opportunity to step up and stop falls in their communities. This 8-week program explores how the fear of falling can influence fall risk, teaches exercises to improve balance, strength, flexibility and endurance, provides assertiveness training and offers solutions to fall hazards in the home. Volunteer Coaches receive initial training and continuing education opportunities to enhance facilitation skills. No previous knowledge about fall prevention or exercise is necessary because all teaching is done from a detailed manual. Programs are scheduled in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties.
