      Botany by Family, with Marc Williams

      This botany-intensive class will focus on the families of plants found commonly in southern Appalachia. Ethnobiologist Marc Williams will cover how to identify plants using the visible characteristics of leaves, flowers, fruits and other parts, and will discuss plant classification based on these features as well as genetic ev-idence. He will also introduce students to the best book and web resources for the exploration of botany in the region. The class will feature a presentation covering the major characteristics of botany in general, followed by hands-on examinations of plant material on a walk through the gardens.

      Marc Williams is an ethnobiologist who has studied the people, plant, mushroom, microbe connection intensively while learning to employ botanicals and other life forms for food, medicine, and beauty. His training includes a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies concentrating in Sustainable Agriculture with a minor in Business from Warren Wilson College and a Master’s degree in Appalachian Stud-ies concentrating in Sustainable Development with a minor in Geography and Planning from Appalachian State University. He is also Executive Director of Plants and Healers International and on the Board of Directors of the Appalachian Institute for Mountain Studies. He has taught hun-dreds of classes about the marvelous world of people and their interface with oth-er organisms while working with more than 70 organizations in the last few years and online at the website

      Cost: Payment required - Participants must pre-register and pre-pay for classes: call 828-252-5190 or come by the Visitor Center between 10 and 4 Monday - Saturday; noon to 4 Sunday. Cost for the workshop is $15 for Botanical Gardens at Asheville members, $20 for non-members. Limited to 20 participants.
