4th Annual Freedom Ball: Celebrating the Release of Ed Chapman

Featuring David LaMotte, River Guergarian and Chris Rosser, others TBA.
Join us to celebrate the release of an innocent man from North Carolina's Death Row, to talk about Death Penalty Repeal, and to enjoy some great music.

On April 2, 2008, Glen Edward Chapman walked away from North Carolina's Central Prison, a free man. He had been behind bars for more than 15 years—13 on death row, awaiting execution—convicted of two murders he did not commit. His prosecutors had suppressed evidence including a jailhouse confession by another inmate, ignored facts and relied on racist innuendo, and his court-appointed attorneys failed to provide an adequate defense. After this miscarriage of justice, the State of North Carolina simply said "go away." There was no recompense for the lost years during which his Mother and the Mother of his children died and his kids grew up without a Father. Not even a "We're sorry." To cap the injustice, prospective employers regard Chapman as an "ex-con," which has sharply limited job prospects. He's worked at an Asheville hotel for almost three years and still doesn't make a living wage or receive benefits. Ed moved to Asheville because the defense team that saved him is based here, and devotes much of his off-work time to speaking before school and community groups about his life experience and urging young people not to make the mistakes he made that contributed to his arrest and conviction. Each year his supporters hold a Freedom Ball to raise money on his behalf.
