A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la lune) (1902) is a French black-and-white silent science fiction film written and directed by Georges Méliès. It tells the take of a group of astronomers on an expedition to the moon and is considered the first science fiction film. Its signature image of a bullet-shaped rocket lodging itself in the eye of a smirking moon is one of the most recognizable images in cinema history. An accomplished magician, Méliès moved from simple recordings of his stage shows to dazzling fantasy epics which were among the first narrative films ever made. It was named one of the 100 greatest films of the 20th century by The Village Voice, ranking at #84.
Plus Conquest of the Pole (Conquête du pôle) (1912), a science fantasy film by Georges Méliès based on the novel The Adventures of Captain Hatteras by Jules Verne. It deals with an extraordinary race to the north pole by rival parties of balloonists. Its most elaborate scene features a man-eating frost giant that attempts to eat the crew.
Der Golem (1915) is a silent horror film written and directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen. The film is an original work inspired by ancient Jewish legend. A clay statue is unearthed by workmen who are digging a well. It is bought by Aaron (Galeen), an antique dealer. He also purchases a book from an old professor which explains that if a capsule containing certain magic words is placed in the figure’s breast, it will come to life as a creature known as the Golem (Wegener). When Aaron finds out that his daughter, Eleanor (Lydia Samonova), is having an affair with a count, he uses the Golem to keep her from going to a party that her lover is throwing. But Eleanor struggles with the Golem and knocks the capsule out of his breast, rendering him dormant. She goes to the party, and while she is away, the professor shows up and replaces the capsule in the Golem’s breast. He comes to life and follows Eleanor to the count’s party. The guests are thrown into a panic, and nobody can kill the monster.
