Description
The Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA) is looking for volunteers to help staff Citizenship Day on November 14th. Targeted primarily at Asian (incl. Korean) communities, we aim to answer questions, assist in filing citizenship applications, and provide general support for those looking to become U.S. citizens. Volunteer Training: 9:00 AM Event: 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM Location (accessible by Rockville METRO station - red line): Rockville County Executive Office Building 101 Monroe Street, 2nd Floor Rockville, MD 20850 Two kinds of volunteers are needed: 1. Bilingual volunteers (English and one of Vietnamese, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Urdu/Hindi, or Bangla) to help with translation duties. Volunteers will at times translate the advice of lawyers, so it is very important to arrive at 9 AM to receive training prior to talking with prospective citizens. There is not much flexibility with this, but if you are bilingual and can only arrive later, you must email me so I can see what we can do. 2. General volunteers to help with setup, food service, general support, greeting prospective citizens, and clean up. Again, it would still be best for general volunteers to show up close to 9AM, but if you absolutely cannot make it by 9AM, email me and I'll see what I can do. Matt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Detailed Description: Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA) is looking for volunteers to help staff Citizenship Day on November 14th. Targeted primarily at Asian communities, we aim to answer questions, assist in filing citizenship applications, and provide general support for those looking to become U.S. citizens. Fluency in Vietnamese, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Urdu/Hindi, or Bangla is preferable, however, not a must. The event will run from 11 AM - 3 PM at the Rockville County Executive Office Building. Volunteers will be expected to be at the site at 9 AM for training, and we will need some assistance with clean up. We need bilingual individuals and others willing to greet, help with a food service, as well as set up and clean up. Please contact Sarah Aldrich at volunteer@mdvietmutual.org for questions and registering. This Citizenship Day is part of a groundbreaking collaborative to implement the Maryland Asian Americans Connected Project through a grant awarded by the Maryland Council for New Americans, in partnership with the Governor's Office of Community Initiatives and the Department of Human Resources. The coalition includes the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC); Boat People SOS (BPSOS); Chinese Culture and Community Service Center (CCACC); Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington (KCSC); Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association, Inc. (MVMA); and South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT).
