Hike - Round Top Peak

Round Top Peak via Ptarmigan Valley Trail This hike is about 11 miles round-trip to the top of Round Top peak (4,755') in the Eagle River area, via the Ptarmigan Valley trail. If folks are ambitious and we have time and safe conditions, we could also hike to the summit of Black Tail Rocks and/or Vista Peak. This will be an all-day hike and it's pretty steep near the top of the peaks and could be icy and/or slippery, so this hike is not for beginning hikers. However, this is an out and back trip, so participants could go part way up and turn around and head back down. There is a nice, picturesque bowl at the bottom of Round Top and Black Tail peaks that makes a nice place to stop, eat lunch and take photos. Required gear required is dependent upon the snow conditions. I'll update this info the day before the hike. Dogs: NO dogs allowed this trip. I also posted this trip with the Mountaineering Club of Alaska and they have a "no dogs allowed" policy. I am limiting the number of participants for the all-day hike for safety reasons. We can meet at the Carrs Muldoon coffeeshop by 9:00 a.m. to carpool. Or meet at the Ptarmigan Valley trailhead at 9:40 a.m. Directions to trailhead: Drive out the Glenn Hwy, take the N. Birchwood exit and go south (right). After 0.3 miles turn right onto the Old Glenn hwy. Drive 0.6 miles and turn left onto a gravel road. There is a sign marking the trailhead.
