GREAT BOOKS DISCUSSION GROUP at Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library
The discussions are held in the Meeting Room of the Charles E. Aug. 18---"Anthropology and the Abnormal," by Ruth Benedict, from The Journal of General Psychology.
Sept. 15---"Hell Screen," a short story by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, from Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories.
Oct. 20---"The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness" by Reinhold Niebhur, from The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness.
Nov. 17---"Why Write?" by Jean-Paul Sartre, from "What is Literature?" and Other Essays.
Dec. 15---"Bright and Morning Star," by Richard Wright, a short story from Uncle Tom's Children.
Jan. 19----"Human Personality," by Simon Weil from Selected Essays, 1934-1943.
All readings have been selected by the Great Books Foundation of Chicago, Ill., and appear in the new anthology, Great Conversations V, with study guides. Purchase of Great Conversations V is not required but it is a convenience for regular participants. It can be purchased from the Foundation for $24.95 plus handling charges of $4.50. It can be ordered by mail (35 East Wacker Drive, Suite 400, Chicago, Ill. 60601). Make check payable to the Great Books Foundation. The anthology can also be ordered by phone (1-800-222-5870, extension 2), fax (1-312-407-0224), or online (www.greatbooks.org) with a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover Card.
