Event details: APO celebrates spring with Mahler and guest vocalists
Description
Poke your head out after a long, cold winter and join the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra for its spring concerts.
Part of the "Inspired by Nature" season, the March 13 concert features guest violinist Allison Bailey during "Spring" from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.
Other guests include mezzo Elizabeth Bishop, who the Washington Post describes as “a rich well of color and emotion,” and tenor Ta'u Pupu'a, who previously played for the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens, on Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde (Songs of the Earth).
Mahler is known for his romantic music, heavy with emotion, but also filled with the wonder of nature and joy at light-hearted moments. Das Lied von der Erde is based on a book of Chinese poetry -- lamentations about loss and regret.
The concert also includes: Grofe's "Sunrise" from the Grand Canyon Suite; Ravel's "Dawn" from Daphnis and Chloe; Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.
