Outpost's Spring 2012 season opens with the music of legendary guitarist, Charlie Christian who, though he died at the young age of 25 (born July 29th 1916 / died August 16th 1939) had an enormous influence on jazz guitar. Christian came on the scene in the Swing Era and charged the atmosphere with his energy and brilliance. Both as the house guitarist at New York's Minton's Playhouse and a member of the Benny Goodman Sextet, he led the transition from swing to bebop and pushed the electric guitar into the spotlight when it was in its infant stages. Influenced by Lester Young's linear concept and gifted with impressive technique, Christian played with such greats as Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Benny Goodman. This tribute ensemble which first appeared on the scene in February 2011, features longtime Albuquerque resident and LA session guitarist, Michael Anthony; renowned trumpeter, Bobby Shew; and drummer, Cal Haines, and was the innovation of the ensemble's bassist, Micky Patten. The repertoire is rich with tunes like "Stompin' At The Savoy", "Rose Room", "Soft Winds", "Airmail Special" and "Salute To Charlie Christian."
