7th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival: Poetry Reading with A.B. Spellman & Hakim Bellamy

Retired NEA Deputy Chairman, historian and poet, A.B. Spellman, who hosts a Meet the Artist event with the NM Jazz Festival's NEA Jazz Masters, Sheila Jordan and Jon Hendricks on Saturday, July 28 at the Lensic, also brings his poetry to Outpost/festival audiences, along with Albuquerque's recently named (and first) Poet Laureate, Hakim Bellamy.

A founding member of the Black Arts Movement, A.B. Spellman has been a regular commentator on jazz for NPR. His first full-length collection of poems, Things I Must Have Known, was described as "a treasure chest of poems of astonishing intellectual and emotional range." Hakim Bellamy is a national and regional Poetry Slam Champion. He holds three consecutive collegiate poetry slam titles and his poetry has been published in inner-city buses and anthologies. The co-creator of the multimedia Hip Hop theater production Urban Verbs: Hip-Hop Conservatory & Theater, Bellamy also facilitates youth writing workshops for schools and community organizations.
