To celebrate the centennial of Nelson Algren’s birth we will screen one of only two Hollywood films based on his work. In this harrowing tale of a heroin addict who tries to get his life back in order after being released from prison, Frank Sinatra plays against type and turns in what is often considered to be his best performance on screen. Novelist Russell Banks, a friend and student of Nelson Algren, will speak and answer questions immediately following the film.
