Description
Sunrise to Sunset. Ajo (Spanish for Garlic), a former copper-mining town, now a retirement community and "snowbird" destination, is also the gateway town for Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Sonora, Mexico. One of the walking routes goes by a large open-pit copper mine, an earthen dam which was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, the train station (now a museum), a cemetery, and several houses built in the early 1900's as well as several stretches of typical Sonoran Desert habitat, with saguaro and organ pipe cacti and palo verde, mesquite, acacia and ironwood trees. The other route includes historical landmarks and interesting homes in this unique town. Both walk past a large mural painted by a locally know Native American artist.
